Bay Oil

  • Description:

Bay oil is derived from a Caribbean tree which grows up to a height of 12-15 m. It is known to exist in five varieties. The west Indian bay tree is often grown in proves together with the all spice or pimento bush. The fruits of both are dried and mixed for the preparation of household allspice. The pleasing smelling oil obtained from its leaves is commercially known as bay oil or West Indian bay oil which is used for various perfumery purposes and in particular forms the basis of the well-known bay rum preparations in Dominical. Essential oil is obtained by hydro/ steam distillation of green leaves, the average yield being 1.2-1.3%. The oil is yellow in colour, becoming darker on exposure to air and has a pleasant odour reminiscent of clove oil with a sharp spicy taste.
